Cavalanche: #6 UVA pulverizes Harvard, 76-27

uva basketballSixth-ranked UVA held Havard to one field goal in the first 20 minutes, led 39-8 at the break and sent a statement to the nation in a 76-27 evisceration of the Crimson on Sunday before a sellout crowd at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, Va.

Virginia (11-0) shot 61.6 percent in the first half as Harvard (7-2), which had been ranked in the preseason AP Top 25 and entered Sunday’s game on a six-game winning streak, couldn’t buy anything from the field.

But it was the Crimson’s first game back from a 13-day layoff for exams, and the rust showed as Harvard went 19:43 without a field goal in a stretch spanning most of the first half into the first three minutes of the second half.

Virginia got an early spark from center Mike Tobey, who scored the Cavs’ first nine points in the opening 4:09. UVA led 16-3 at the 11:55 media timeout, and the game was never below double digits afterward.

Tobey and Brogdon each scored 15 to lead the ‘Hoos, who are off for a holiday break and return to action on Dec. 30 against Davidson.
