Beltway Report: Runs hard to come by for Nationals, Orioles

nationals_logoNationals make early homer by Ryan Zimmerman hold up: Ryan Zimmerman got Washington on the board with a first-inning two-run homer, but that was the extent of the offense in a 2-1 Nats win over the New York Mets on Wednesday.

Jordan Zimmerman (1-0) was solid in his 2015 debut, giving up a run on five hits in six innings, striking out four with no walks. Zimmerman threw 91 pitches, 63 for strikes.

Bryce Harper had two hits in three at bats for Washington (1-1), which has now scored three runs in its two games in 2015.

Harper also had two hits, including a solo homer, in the Nats’ 3-1 loss to New York on Monday.

Jacon deGrom (0-1) took the loss for the Mets, allowing two runs on six hits in six innings of work.

Drew Storen earned his first save of 2015 with a perfect ninth, getting two of the three outs via the strikeout.

 

Next up for the Nats: The finale of the three-game series with the Mets is set for 1:05 p.m. Thursday with Stephen Strasburg going for Washington against Mets starter Matt Harvey.

 

lgo_mlb_baltimore_oriolesO’s fall to 2-1 with shutout loss: Jake Odorizzi and three Tampa relievers limited Baltimore (2-1) to three hits in a 2-0 shutout of the O’s to salvage the finale of the teams’ opening three-game series.

Odorizzi (1-0) went six and two-thirds innings, striking out seven, walking none and allowing two hits.

Orioles hitters combined for 13 strikeouts on the night.

Leadoff man Alejandro De Aza was the lone bright spot on offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate.

Miguel Gonzalez (0-1) took the loss, giving up a run on three hits in five and two-thirds, striking out five and walking five.

 

Next up for Baltimore: Thursday is an off-day, with the O’s prepping for their home opener on Friday with Toronto coming in for a three-game series that will launch a six-game homestand.
