Virginia State Police have seized a vehicle involved in a fatal hit-and-run crash where a cyclist was killed on Saturday in Bedford County. Damage on the suspect vehicle is consistent with evidence left at the scene of the crash.

Information and interviews regarding the crash have developed promising leads and a better description of the driver, police report.

State Police are in the process of obtaining several search warrants and believe an arrest is imminent.

The hit-and-run crash killed George Jerome Stephens, 67, of Jacksonville, Fla. The crash occurred at 1:30 p.m. in the 3900 block of Nemmo Road when a truck crossed the center line and struck the cyclist.

The driver allegedly got out of his vehicle and checked on the injured cyclist and immediately got back in the vehicle and fled the scene. Stephens died at the scene.

State Police report today that the driver is described as a white male between the ages of 20 and 30, with brown or black hair and facial hair. At the time of the crash, the driver had a full beard and tan or dark skin, consistent with someone who works outside.

Eye witnesses originally said the suspect driver was Hispanic or possibly Indian, 30 to 40 years of age, with short dark curly hair.

The vehicle was described as a silver/gray pickup truck pulling a small black utility trailer. State Police said the vehicle would have damage to the driver’s side mirror and damage to the front left headlight and front fender.

Anyone with information on the crash is asked to call the Virginia State Police at (540) 375-9500.
