Virginia men’s head basketball coach Tony Bennett has named seniors Calvin Baker, Jerome Meyinsse and Solomon Tat tri-captains of the team for the remainder of the 2009-10 season.

“Calvin, Jerome and Solomon have displayed good leadership to this point in the season and I look forward to them serving as our tri-captains,” Bennett said. “This is something I’ve thought about and I took time to observe the team. With the beginning of the ACC portion of our schedule I thought this was the appropriate time to appoint these players our captains.”

Bennett announced his decision to the team on Friday (Jan. 8th) before the Cavaliers’ first ACC game of the season at NC State on Saturday (Jan. 9).

Baker, a 6-2 guard from Newport News, Va., was one of Virginia’s tri-captains last season. He has lettered the last two seasons for the Cavaliers after transferring to Virginia from William & Mary. Baker has played in 12 games this season, starting the last five, and has 31 assists and just eight turnovers. He is averaging 4.3 points, 1.5 rebounds and 2.6 assists a game.

Meyinsse, a 6-9 forward/center from Baton Rouge, La., has lettered three times for UVa. Named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Men’s Basketball Team each of the last two years, Meyinsse has played in all 13 of Virginia’s games this season and has started six. He is averaging 3.5 points and 3.7 rebounds a game this season.

Tat, a 6-5 guard/forward from Jos Plateau, Nigeria, has lettered for the Cavaliers each of the last three seasons. He has played in six games this season.
