Virginia State Police is on the hunt for a white pickup truck that may have caused a serious crash on Interstate 64 in Augusta County this morning.

The accident, at mile marker 96 just outside of Waynesboro, led to serious injuries to a driver and passenger after their vehicle went into the median, struck an embankment and caught fire.

The crash occurred at 9:33 a.m. after the suspect truck changed lanes abruptly to get around a tractor trailer with an oversized load that was travelling at only 35 miles per hour.

The driver of an oversized load was traveling eastbound in the right lane and had pilot vehicles positioned in front of and behind it.

A white Subaru was in the left passing lane when a pickup truck allegedly cut the driver off, changing from the right lane to the left lane abruptly, according to a report from Virginia State Police.

The Subaru braked suddenly, lost control and struck the rear passenger side of the oversized tractor trailer. The vehicle then crossed back into the right lane and into the median, striking an embankment. The driver and a juvenile passenger were assisted from the Subaru by passersby prior to the vehicle becoming fully engulfed in flames. Both victims were transported to UVA Medical Center with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

The pickup truck continued eastbound on Interstate 64 and did not stop. The suspect vehicle is described as a white pickup truck with a camper shell on the bed and orange reflective tape around the top of the shell. The driver was described as an adult white male with a beard.

Virginia State Police is asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash, has information about the pickup truck or may have dash camera footage to contact Virginia State Police dispatch at #77 or call (540) 444-7784.

The crash remains under investigation.
