The Harrisonburg-based Citizens for Animal Welfare today praised Gov. Bob McDonnell for his move last week to propose an amendment to a House of Delegates bill that would prohibit the practice of breed discrimination in animal shelters.

“Once again the Rockingham-Harrrisonburg Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals maintained the status quo and opposed this life-saving legislation,” said Sarah Warner, communications director for Citizens for Animal Welfare, a volunteer organization that works in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.

“We encourage the R-H SPCA to unite with Citizens for Animal Welfare and fellow animal welfare organizations by applauding Gov. McDonnell’s courageous and compassionate leadership with his amendment,” Warner said.

The amendment would add to the amendment language declaring that “(n)o pound may euthanize, or prohibit the adoption of, any dog based solely on breed.”

The McDonnell amendment will be considered by the General Assembly at its reconvened session on Wednesday.
