The 19th-ranked Virginia women’s basketball team fell on the road at No. 11 Florida State, 68-50, in the Atlantic Coast Conference opener for both teams. Monica Wright (Woodbridge, Va.) led the Cavaliers with 19 points, six rebounds and five steals.

Virginia’s record went to 11-4 and 0-1 in the ACC, while Florida State improved to 14-2 and 1-0 in the league.

Wright’s 19 points increased her career total to 2,120 as she continues to chase Dawn Staley’s school-record 2,135 points. Wright is now 16 points away from becoming Virginia’s all-time leading scorer.

The Cavaliers held a 34-32 halftime lead. Florida State began the second half on a 12-2 run to take an eight-point lead, 44-36, with 12 minutes left in the game. The Cavaliers cut it to four on a steal and fast break lay-up by Wright at the 6:15 mark, 49-45, but Florida State ended the game on a 19-5 run for the win.

Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) added 10 points for Virginia, while Telia McCall (Marietta, Ga.) scored seven and Lexie Gerson (Fort Washington, Pa.) had five.

Florida State was led by Chasity Clayton with 15 points and eight rebounds. The Seminoles were last year’s ACC regular season co-champions.

The Seminoles won their 10th-ever game against Virginia, making the all-time series record 30-10 in favor of the Cavaliers.

Up next for Virginia is a nationally televised (ESPN2) home game vs. Maryland. That game begins at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 11 at John Paul Jones Arena.
