Reeling Virginia Tech Hokies drop third straight, Boston College wins, 33-31

vatechVirginia Tech rallied from a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit to take the lead, but a 44-yard field goal by Alex Howell gave Boston College the lead, and quarterback Tyler Murphy ran 57 yards for a touchdown on a third-down play with 2:59 to go to lift the Eagles to a 33-31 win on Saturday in Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Va.

The Hokies (4-5, 1-4 ACC) trailed 14-10 at the half and 23-10 entering the fourth quarter, but got back into the game on a Michael Brewer 1-yard TD run on a fourth-and-goal play with 11:51 to go and took the lead at 24-23 at the 7:12 mark on a Brewer to Bucky Hodges 7-yard touchdown pass.

Boston College (6-3, 3-2 ACC) drove to the Tech 27 to set up the long kick that gave the Eagles the lead back by Howell, who was inserted into the lineup after starting placekicker Joey Launceford missed an extra point following a third-quarter score.

The run by Murphy on a third-down play after the Hokies burned timeouts to try to conserve time for their offense was a backbreaker, but Tech didn’t throw in the towel, driving 75 yards in nine plays for a Brewer-to-Ryan Malleck 5-yard TD pass with 28 seconds left to cut the margin to two.

Boston College recovered the ensuing onside kick to seal the victory.

The loss is the fourth this season in Lane Stadium for Virginia Tech, which remains in last place in the ACC Coastal Division with the defeat.

Brewer was 31-for-48 for 345 yards and two touchdowns for the Hokies, who were limited to 69 yards on 29 rushing attempts.

Murphy was 8-of-15 passing for 110 yards and two touchdowns through the air and also gained 122 yards on 18 carries with another score on the ground.
