Every year about this time, the men and women of the Waynesboro Church of the Brethren fire up their ovens and disappear into a whirlwind of flour and sugar. They’re getting ready for the Church’s annual Craft and Cookie Bazaar Saturday, now in its fourteenth year. The event has become so popular that crowds shiver outside in the early dawn, lining up in the lower parking lot with bags and boxes, and advancing on the fellowship hall as the clock strikes eight.
There are hundreds of reasons to patronize the sale, but it no longer needs any promotion. The thousands of cookies and dozens of cakes sell out, down to the last buttery crumb, snapped up by a public that knows a good thing. It’s a sweet start to December and the Christmas season, where you can spend a couple of homey, home-town hours and return feeling a thousand times better than if you’d gone to the mall.
The popular event also features crafts, poinsettias, berries and magnolia leaves, cookbooks, jar mixes, homemade relish from the New Hope farm of Tommy and Loretta Crickenberger, and a”bargain room” with cookbooks and jewelry. Baskets assembled by residents of Western State Hospital and mats by the DePaul groups support those worthwhile local programs; and candy jars made by the young people of the church support the youth programs.
