The 19th Annual Charlottesville Chamber Music Festival opens this year with a free mid-day concert at The Paramount Theater on September 6th, featuring music for strings, piano, flute and percussion.
The Festival’s Artistic Directors, violinist Timothy Summers and cellist Raphael Bell will welcome guest artists for this concert – violinists Johnny Gandelsman and Mayuko Ishigami, pianist Mimi Solomon, and flutist Sooyun Kim. As a special treat, UVA’s virtuoso percussionist I-Jen Fang will be joined by colleagues Gregory Beyer and Matthew Gold for a sampling of percussion works.
The Festival finale on September 23rd will also take place at The Paramount. A high point of this concert will be a work by the Baltic mystic Peteris Vasks. His meditative piece, Plainscapes, evokes the plains of Latvia through choral vocalises that build to a climax – the image of Nature awakening. The chorus for this marvelous work will be the UVA Chamber Singers conducted by Michael Slon. The Festival will close with pianist Judith Gordon joining CCMF’s founders, Timothy Summers and Raphael Bell, in a performance of Mozart’s G-Major Piano Trio (K.496).
