Update: Monday, 6:35 p.m. James Madison University has hired Mike Houston as its new football head coach, Director of Athletics Jeff Bourne announced Monday.

“I am thrilled to welcome Mike Houston as the next football head coach at James Madison,” Bourne said. “Mike has been a fast riser in the coaching ranks with success turning programs around at the Division II and FCS levels. His pedigree for winning and ability to lead young men make him the perfect fit to build upon the foundation already in place at JMU.”

JMU will hold a formal press conference to announce Houston’s hire on Tuesday, Jan. 19 at 3 p.m. in the Bridgeforth Stadium Club.

The event will be open to the public and streamed live on MadiZONE.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to be the next head football coach at James Madison University,” Houston said. “James Madison is a special place and my family and I look forward to becoming integral parts of the community.”

First report: Monday, 3;47 p.m. FootballScoop.com is reporting that JMU has offered its football coach job to Citadel coach Mike Houston.

Houston, 44, led the Bulldogs to the FCS playoffs in 2015, his second season with the program.

The Citadel also posted a historic win in November, a 23-22 upset of SEC member South Carolina.

Houston was 29-8 in three seasons at Division II Lenoir-Rhyne before taking the post at The Citadel.

He was paid a base salary of $210,000 a year at The Citadel. Everett Withers, who left James Madison to take over FBS Texas State earlier this month, was paid $325,000 a year at JMU.

Withers led the Dukes to an 18-7 record and two FCS playoff berths in his two seasons in Harrisonburg.
