Today’s example of how the super-conference era in college sports is dumb: UNC and NC State announced that they’re going to play a non-conference basketball game in Greensboro in December.
The release from UNC Athletics on this told us that last season was the first time since 1919 that the two programs only played each other once.
James Naismith had barely put up the first peach basket by that point.
With the ACC only giving us one UNC-State conference game again this year, the ADs got together and agreed to a Dec. 15 game in the Greensboro Coliseum.
They’re calling it the Tobacco Road Classic presented by Old Dominion Freight Line.
And it’s the first of two such games – the release from UNC Athletics tells us that the teams will meet in Greensboro for the second Tobacco Road Classic during the 2027-2028 season.
