Staunton: Route 262 project comes in $1M under budget

The Route 262 water-line project was completed on Nov. 1, approximately two months ahead of schedule. The original budget was $2,800,000 and the final cost of the project was $1,718,000, which included engineering, easement acquisitions and construction, saving $1,082,000.

The project provided three basic improvements to the city water system:

An improved water supply to customers in northeast end of the city including the Green Hills Technology Park.

A critical loop to the system that reduces water outages and provides an alternative to an aging 14-inch water line.

Improved storage capacity in the Woodlee Road water by 39 percent and to a lesser degree in the Dogwood Hill tank on the south end of the city.

All three improvements will provide greater fire fighting capability on the north end of the city.

There was one significant change order for $333,000 that extended the water line under Route 262 at Commerce Road to the Ingleside property. This will facilitate a future extension along Commerce Road to the north in order to provide better water pressure to the Olde South subdivision and a loop into the Green Hill Technology Center.
