Shenandoah Valley Art CenterThe Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of January, is exhibiting in the Cabell/Arehart Gallery the artwork of the fourth annual Winter Contemporary Juried Exhibition: Women’s Work.

This collection of cutting edge artwork seeks out works that push boundaries in terms of subject, presentation, or materials. This year’s show features work from: Inez Berinson Blanks, Colleen Conner, Eileen Doughty, Claudia Furlow, Gail Haile, Anne Hanger, Sarah Lapp, Kay Lipscomb, Alexa Luna, Piu Mahapatra, Sue McCoy, Karen Rosasco, Susan Rosen, Peg Sheridan, Amanda Smith, Nancy Spahr, Paige Speight, Astrid Tuttle, and Christine M. Watts.  Juror, Joan H. Ranzini, carefully selected the works to create lively interactions and a snapshot of contemporary work from women in our region. The exhibition opened December 8 and continues until January 19, 2019.

In the Members’ Gallery, the theme is Small Works, presenting a variety of media and creative ideas by SVAC member artists. These are small unique pieces ready for purchase and suitable for the art enthusiast or collector!

Want to study art? Check out the classes being taught at SVAC during January! Study painting with Peg Sheridan in her class: Capturing the Subtle Beauty of Winter in Watercolor. Winter is a great time to paint, and you can find inspiration all around you!  Learn how to make beautiful wet-in-wet washes that depict drifting snow.  Also, discover how to paint snow falling, snow covered trees, and several methods for saving and adding whites to a painting.  Along with this, you will sharpen your skills in planning a painting.  Peg will offer critiques, color worksheets, and one-on-one help.  This class serves beginners and advanced level painters. (Wednesday, January 16, 2019, 10:00 a.m. – 3 p.m., $80)  Registration information can be found on the SVAC webpage for adult classes.

Don’t miss the opportunity to study Monoprinting with Piper Groves. Learn to use the Conrad Mixed Media Press at SVAC to create prints using the magic of Monoprinting. A variety of methods will be demonstrated, such as, using water based inks and acrylic plates to create prints from paintings. Alternate printing methods using Gelli plates will also be presented to create prints with no press needed! Many materials will be provided including ink, plates, brayers, and collage materials. Students are encouraged to bring additional brushes, flat textural materials, and dried plant materials. Some paper will be provided, but additional Bristol paper should be brought. (January 9, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. or January 12, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., $55 per person, per session; $100 for two sessions)

For the young artist, the ever popular Saturday Art for Kids is designed as a program that expands upon art offered in school or as an art experience for the home schooled. The classes are taught by artists who are amazing with kids. All supplies and snacks are included for children ages 6 – 10. Due to heavy demand, children must be registered on the SVAC website or by calling 949-7662.  (January 5, 12, 19, and 26, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., $15 per class)

Open studio opportunities in the Virginia Ross Education Studio are available to printmakers and ceramic artists.  Access to top of the line clay and printmaking equipment and space to work will be furnished for $60 per quarter.   Apply on line at www.SVACart.com.

The art center is a retail alliance partner with the Artisan Center of Virginia and ACV Trail Site. In the SVAC Gift Shop you can find the perfect creative gift in fiber, jewelry, wood, glass, pottery, and more by juried artisans from Virginia and SVAC member artists.
