For the 18th year, DuPont Community Credit Union will award $1,000 scholarships to 20 high school seniors and one adult at DCCU’s Annual Meeting in late April. A total of $21,000 in scholarships will be awarded at the meeting. The deadline for applications is March 4, 2013.

As the results roll in from a two-year Shenandoah Valley Regional Energy Efficiency Strategy developed and executed by the Central Shenandoah Planning District Commission, the program is being touted by Virginia Department of Mines, Minerals and Energy Projects Coordinator, Ron Hachey, as a “shining star” among other state energy efficiency projects.

For three days this week, Fishburne Military School was one of the centers of the basketball universe. More than 80 college coaches were in Waynesboro for the Best Western Waynesboro Caisson Shootout, which featured four of the top 10 prep teams in the nation, and a plethora of future college stars.

Fishburne Military School head coach Ed Huckaby expected a good defensive effort out of his team after the Caissons gave up 100 points in a one-point loss to Gray Military Academy Friday night.

A Travis Hammonds three-pointer with 4.2 seconds left brought Gray Military Academy all the way back from a late 12-point deficit and lifted the War Eagles to a thrilling 100-99 upset of sixth-ranked Fishburne Military School Friday night.

Sometimes serendipity works in this business. I saw a listing for a one-man show in the Virginia Commission for the Arts touring roster. I contacted the actor, John Hardy, about coming to Waynesboro to do his original script Rattlesnake, and we agreed on an April date and I wrote and secured a VCA matching grant to bring him to WTA’s Gateway.

Folks in Waynesboro realize that there’s a jewel of a basketball team that plays up on the hill overlooking downtown, right? Um, well, no. I mean, Roy Williams knows. You know, the North Carolina basketball coach? Won a national championship or two? He was in the gym watching a game in the Best Western Waynesboro Caisson Shootout today.

The buzz at Fishburne Military School Thursday had to do with a particular gentleman wearing a sweater of a distinctive shade of blue on hand to watch the opener of the FMS Best Western Waynesboro Caisson Shootout. North Carolina coach Roy Williams was in the stands for the opener of the Shootout pitting Miller School and St. John’s Northwest Military School, ostensibly to see Isaac Copeland, a 6’9″ forward at Miller School who is getting serious attention from UNC, Virginia, North Carolina State, Missouri and Ohio State.
