Students at colleges and universities throughout the Sixth District and the rest of the country depend on student loans to finance their education each year. In fact, nearly 12 million students in the United States borrow annually to help cover education costs. But without congressional action, on July 1st interest rates for federally subsidized student loans are set to double from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent.

Democratic ticket united on job creation agenda

The newly-elected Democratic Ticket of Terry McAuliffe, Ralph Northam, and Mark Herring appeared at the Democratic Party of Virginia’s Unity Breakfast on Wednesday morning following Tuesday’s Democratic primary. Attendees heard from all three candidates on the ticket, who rallied Virginia Democrats to work as a united front toward victory in November and stressed how they are focused on driving a mainstream agenda of job creation and economic growth across the Commonwealth.

Ralph Northam, Mark Herring win Democratic nominations

State Sens. Ralph Northam and Mark Herring will complete the Democratic Party ticket for the 2013 state elections. Northam, D-Norfolk, defeated Aneesh Chopra for the lieutenant governor nomination, with 54.3 percent of the more than 140,000 votes cast. Herring, D-Leesburg, won a tighter battle with former federal prosecutor Justin Fairfax for the attorney general nomination, with 51.6 percent of the votes going to Herring.

Business leaders endorse Terry McAuliffe for governor

Prominent Virginia business leaders Jimmy Hazel, S. Buford Scott and David Addison announced their support for Terry McAuliffe on Monday. Hazel is the current chairman of Virginia FREE (Virginia Foundation for Research and Economic Education), a nonpartisan organization which provides information to Virginia’s business community in order to advance responsible, pro-business government. Scott is a former Chairman of Virginia FREE and Addison is currently a member of their Board of Directors.

In case you have forgotten, Tuesday, June 11 is Democratic Party statewide primary election day. It is a day when Democrats go to the polls to select their candidates for lieutenant governor, attorney general, and if you live next door in Herndon a Democratic candidate for the House of Delegates. The very faithful Democrats will be going to the polls in a vote that is likely to have turnout in the single digits.
