The Virginia women’s basketball team (12-6, 2-2 ACC) plays at Georgia Tech (11-7, 1-4 ACC) on Sunday, Jan. 17 at 2 p.m. in Atlanta, Ga.

The Cavaliers, who are receiving votes in this week’s USA Today Coaches’ Poll, are coming off their lowest-scoring game since a 62-41 loss at Duke in 2013. UVA’s 59-41 loss to No. 23 Louisville on Thursdaynight (Jan. 14) is only the third time since the start of the 1978-79 season that a Cavalier team scored 41 or fewer points in a game.
Sophomore Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va.) scored a team-high 13 points against Louisville, the 11th-consecutive double-digit scoring performance for the guard and the third-straight game in which she has led the team in scoring. Venson, who ranks sixth in the ACC in scoring average at 15.2 points per game, is averaging 16.7 points per game in the last three contests. Venson, who did not have an assist in the win at Wake Forest last Sunday (Jan. 10), had all four of Virginia’s assists against the Cardinals.
Junior guard Breyana Mason (Woodbridge, Va.) scored 12 points against Louisville, her third double-digit scoring performance in the last four games. After going 2-of-13 from the field at Wake, Mason was 5-of-8, including 2-of-2 from three-point range, against Louisville.
Sophomore Lauren Moses (Mount Holly, N.J.) grabbed 11 rebounds against Louisville, her fifth double-digit rebounding performance of the year. Moses ranks ninth in the ACC, averaging 7.4 boards per game.
Georgia Tech snapped a four-game-losing streak on Thursday with an 80-73 victory at home against North Carolina. Virginia is 7-3 in its last 10 games while Georgia Tech is 6-4.
Virginia leads the all-time series against the Yellow Jackets, 53-16, but Georgia Tech has won five of the last six meetings. Virginia’s last win over the Yellow Jackets was a 62-51 victory in Atlanta on Jan. 10, 2013. Last year, Georgia Tech won 68-62 in Charlottesville in a game that featured 15 ties and 12 lead changes.
The Cavaliers will continue their road trip next Thursday, Jan. 21, when they play at No. 14 Florida State at 7 p.m. Virginia will be back in action at John Paul Jones Arena on Sunday, Jan. 24, hosting Pittsburgh at 1 p.m. The Pittsburgh game is National Girls and Women in Sports Day. In addition to a halftime ceremony honoring the 1991 National Champion Virginia women’s lacrosse team, National Girls and Women in Sports Day will also feature a pregame sports festival held in the east end, upper-level concourse of John Paul Jones Arena. The festival will include six sports stations for youth to visit, including basketball, football, golf, rowing, softball and volleyball. The festival will take place from 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Youth completing all six stations will receive a complimentary t-shirt. Admission to the festival is free with a game ticket. There will also be activities for youth set-up in the main lobby of the arena starting at 11:30 a.m., including a photo booth, a sign-making station, face painting, a balloon artist and inflatable games.
