I often think about our rural grandmothers and great grandmothers, and the lives they lived. In many mountain homes, electrity didn’t arrive until the ’50s; outhouses were still a common sight through the ’60s and ’70s. I still see, though rarely now, smoke coming from chimneys sometimes on a summer morning, a sure sign that somebody is using their wood stove to fix breakfast and probably dinner in the cool part of the day.
When my own children were young and had bouts of stomach illness, I’d imagine how these women managed when everyone was sick, with no hot water, indoor bathrooms, or any of the comforts that ease this dramatically difficult part of family life.
