WINNERS: We get to keep our Starbucks!

Starbucks has released a list of the coffee shops that it will be closing as part of its restructuring, and – phew! – our shops in Staunton and Waynesboro are safe.

More strawberries and cream for me, and peppermint white chocolate mocha for the missus.

LOSERS: In the Battle of the Bulging, us

The South is the fattest region in the U.S., according to data from the Centers for Disease Control, though I have to wonder about the data in one respect.

The numbers are based on the outdated body mass index that looks at two basic data subsets, height and weight, leading to assumptions that a 5-foot, 9-inch man weighing 203 pounds would be conisdered obese, when I would bet that the average NFL tailback would come in at close to 5-9, 203, and would hardly be considered obese or at all out of shape.

That said, a 5-9, 203-pound guy is pretty much a Sherman tank, as am I, at 6-2, 238.

(I could clear many a hole for that 5-9, 203 tailback. It’s all about putting hats on hats.)

TODAY’S HOT OR NOT: The weather

It’s hot, I know. But generally, we’ve had it pretty easy this summer so far, methinks. Aside from that stretch of 100-degree days back in early June, which technically isn’t summer anyway, we’ve been getting more than our fair share of days in the 80s.

Which means … yeah, we’re due for some payback.
