Wildlife Center dedicates new flight pen

The Wildlife Center of Virginia dedicated its new eagle flight pen on Thursday.  Participating in the ribbon-cutting ceremony were Virginia Secretary of Natural Resources Doug Domenech and Bob Duncan, director of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries.

The new flight pen is designed for rehabilitation and flight training by Bald and Golden Eagles, vultures, and hawks.  The pen – labeled A-3 – is 89 feet long and 16 feet wide, measuring 23 feet at its highest point.

The enclosures features an “eaglet loft” – a special room attached to the flight pen to provide a nest for young birds.  The loft area will enable young birds to observe adults of their own species in the larger flight area.  There is a door opening from the loft into the flight area, with perches for use by birds that are just venturing from the nest and learning to fly.

Construction of the flight pen, and installation of an online “web cam”, was made possible through the generous support of:
– Chase Community Giving
– Jeff and Rose Crofutt, in memory of Judith Crofutt
– Dominion
– The 2011 Garden of Eagles calendar project
– Merck Company Foundation

Partners in the construction of the flight pen were:
– Dominion
– Kjellstrom and Lee
– Kurt Plowman
– Virginia Department of Corrections

Additional information about A-3, including construction plans and photos, is available at www.wildlifecenter.org/wp/2011/09/new-eagle-flight-enclosure.
