VMI Football got a game in Week 0, ahead of the opener for James Franklin at Virginia Tech next weekend.
The Keydets opened a new era of their own, with first-year coach Ashley Ingram.
Didn’t go well.
Idaho State broke open a 3-0 game inside of two minutes to go in the first half, scoring touchdowns on five straight possessions, on the way to a 38-10 win on Saturday.
Pocatello, Idaho – distance from Lexington: 2,070 miles – that’s a long way to go for what was almost certainly a miniscule guarantee paycheck.
VMI did most of its damage on offense after the outcome was already decided, putting up 109 of its 240 yards on offense for the day in the fourth quarter.
QB Chandler Wilson (seven carries, 62 yards) got VMI on the board on a 31-yard TD run with 7:11 to go.
Ingram brought the option offense with him to VMI; the Keydets put up 229 yards on the ground, but three passers combined to go 5-for-9 for 11 yards through the air.
Afterward, he had to find the silver linings.
“I was very pleased with how our defense played in the first half. It was about as good as we could have played against a high-powered team,” Ingram said. “Offensively, we needed to get a first down right before the half so we wouldn’t have to punt the ball right before they scored. During the third quarter, give them credit, they made some plays. They blocked a punt and got a touchdown out of it, so we’ll need to do some things better there.
“I’m proud of the way we kept battling and kept fighting. This is the first step in a long, long process. We’ll just keep battling, and I’m proud of our guys,” Ingram said.
