Washington powers past Phils, 5-1

Joe Ross gave up three hits in seven innings, and Washington went deep four times in a 5-1 win at Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Ross (5-4, 2.37 ERA) struck out five and walked two for the Nats (32-21), who have a two-game lead in the National League East on the New York Mets, 6-4 losers to the Chicago White Sox Tuesday night.

Jayson Werth (8), Daniel Murphy (9), Danny Espinosa (6) and Stephen Drew (3) all homered for Washington.

Drew’s homer in the ninth, an inside-the-park job, was the eighth pinch-hit home run for Washington this season, tying the franchise record.

Murphy was 2-for-4 at the plate to raise his batting average to .397.

Bryce Harper, the reigning National League MVP, was out of the lineup Tuesday, after being hit on the right knee by a pitch in the seventh inning of the Nats’ win in Philly on Monday.
