Warner for Virginia today announced the launch of Veterans and Military Families for Warner, a group of military men, women and families who support Senator Mark Warner for re-election because of his steadfast commitment to our veterans and military families. Veterans and Military Families for Warner includes decorated war veterans, women leaders in the armed forces, spouses of active and retired military as well as young service members.
“As the son of a veteran, I am honored to have earned the support of veterans and military families across the Commonwealth. Our troops, veterans and military families bravely serve our country and I am honored to be able to represent them in the Senate,” said Senator Mark Warner. “I will continue the work I began during my first term to increase access to health care services for members of the military and veterans, and to expand employment and educational opportunities so that our troops have a fair shot when they return home.”
Senator Warner has been recognized as a national leader in fighting for our military men and women. He has worked tirelessly to represent the more than 800,000 veterans that reside in the Commonwealth. Recently, when news broke of the unacceptable wait time at VA hospitals, instead of waiting for Congress to act, Senator Warner partnered with the Northern Virginia Technology Council to offer private assistance to the VA to help reduce wait times for veterans across the country. Senator Warner took the same approach in 2010 in partnering with Virginia IT leaders in a pro bono initiative to correct widespread back-office errors at Arlington National Cemetery. Warner also pushed the VA to use an innovative program started at William and Mary Law School’s Puller Clinic to help reduce the backlog for veteran disability claims.
Senator Warner is committed to keeping military jobs in Virginia and worked with the Navy to maintain funding for its 11-carrier fleet in Norfolk. When sequestration budget cuts threatened to halt thousands of shipyard jobs in Hampton Roads, Senator Warner worked with Pentagon officials to protect these jobs and minimize the impact of the sequester on military operations in Virginia.
Senator Warner has pledged to improve health care for our service members and successfully closed a loophole in the VA to ensure equal mental health benefits for military women and female veterans. Senator Warner continues to support Virginia military communities. He worked with the Navy to strengthen its oversight of off-base military housing across the nation and introduced a bipartisan bill to fight against potential cuts to local commissaries utilized by military families. Warner supported the VOW to Hire Heroes Act and continues to create new educational and training opportunities for our veterans through programs like the Veterans Corps, an initiative to extend service opportunities for veterans returning home.
