VMI junior guard Q.J. Peterson was named to the 2015-16 Southern Conference Preseason All-Conference team as voted by the conference coaches. The league made the announcement Thursday from its office in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

It marked the second straight year Peterson had been selected to the 10-member team as he also earned a spot on the 2014-15 squad.

Peterson averaged a team leading 19.6 points per game in 18 games last year before he was placed on medical furlough January 15 and did not appear in action the remainder of the season. He produced seven games of 20+ points in 2014-15.

Peterson surpassed the 1,000 point career scoring mark during VMI’s January 10 win at Furman and in doing so became the 39th player in VMI history to do so. He currently has 1,016 points entering the 2015-16 campaign.

Peterson was named SoCon Player of the Week for games played December 2-8, 2014 after averaging nearly 30 points a game over VMI’s first two SoCon games last year. Peterson scored 28 in the win over Samford and registered a game-high 32 against Mercer, and effort that included six three-pointers.

The Hedgesville, West Virginia native also was named All-Tournament  for the 2014 All-Military Classic for the second time when he averaged 22 points a game in action against The Citadel and Army. Peterson was named MVP of the 2013 tournament when it was held in Lexington.
