The Keydets defeated Richmond last season 11-2 on April 18 in a wild affair. The two teams were tied at two through nine innings, but VMI exploded for nine innings in the 10th frame. Corey Johnston earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief.

The Spiders enter the contest with an 18-14-1 record. Richmond won two of three at Dayton in Atlantic 10 action this weekend, winning the first and last games of the series. Tyler Plantier went 3-4 with a home run and five RBI in an 11-3 win in the series finale.

VMI dropped two of three in a Southern Conference series at Wofford Friday and Saturday. The Keydets took the last game 5-4 after a strong pitching performance from junior Zak Kent. He allowed just five hits and no walks while striking out 11 batters in a complete-game victory. He moves into fourth-place in VMI baseball history with 218 career strikeouts, passing three in just one game: Michael Bowman, (209, 2006-08), Chris Henderson, (212, 2006-09) and Phil Hendrix, (216, 2000-03). Kent is in fifth-place already for strikeouts in a season with 92.

Senior backstop Ryan Smoot hit .400 in his two starts in the Wofford series, with a .500 on-base and .600 slugging percentages, respectively. Josh Hollifield hit .333 and scored three runs and Nathan Loyd was 2-6 with a home run. Jon Clines had a pinch hit home run and responded to his first start at designated hitter by going 2-4 with a double in the final game of the series.
