uva-logo-new2Two members of the UVA volleyball team, junior Lauren Fuller and sophomore Jasmine Burton, were named to the Preseason All-Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Team, the ACC announced Tuesday (Aug. 26). In addition, the Cavaliers were picked to finish sixth in the preseason poll, as voted on by the league’s head coaches.

Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) was a 2013 AVCA All-East Coast Region honorable mention and was named to the All-ACC Second Team after her first year with the Cavaliers. The setter recorded 1,455 assists, the seventh-most in Cavalier single-season history, and averaged 11.37 assists per set, the second-most in the ACC.

Burton (West Hills, Calif.) was named the 2013 ACC Freshman of the Year after earning 380 kills on a .259 hitting percentage. Both marks rank fifth on UVa’s freshman lists. The All-ACC Third Team member notched double-digit kills in 22 matches, including three 20-kill matches.

The Cavaliers return five starters from last season’s squad that finished 18-14 overall and 11-9 in ACC play after recording a 9-22 overall record and 3-17 mark in conference play in 2012.

Florida State was picked as the preseason No. 1 with seven first-place votes, while Duke and North Carolina each picked up four first-place votes each. Miami was selected fourth, while ACC newcomer Louisville was fifth.

Virginia opens the 2014 campaign with a tournament at Marshall in Huntington, W.Va., Aug. 29-30. UVa’s first match of the season is against Illinois-Chicago on Aug. 29 at 7:30 p.m. The Cavaliers’ first home match is Sept. 5 vs. LIU Brooklyn at 7 p.m.
