UVA golf pair advance in U.S. Amateur

uva-logo-new2UVA senior men’s golfer Denny McCarthy (Rockville, Md.) and sophomore Derek Bard (New Hartford, N.Y.) advanced to the match play portion of the 114th U.S. Amateur Championships taking place in Johns Creek, Ga., at the Atlanta Athletic Club. McCarthy completed the 36 holes of stroke play tied for 20th at 2-under 141. Bard shot 1-under 142 to tie for 24th place.

Incoming freshman Austen Truslow (New Smyrna Beach, Fla.) placed 197th overall at 9-over 152.

Georgia’s Lee McCoy and Arkansas Taylor Moore led the 312-player field by shooting 8-under 135.

Six rounds of match play begin Wednesday and the championship concludes with a scheduled 36-hole championship match on Aug. 17.
