UVA Football Notebook: ‘Hoos move up one spot in polls; injury updates

The people who vote in the AP and coaches polls are missing out on what UVA Football has been doing lately.

After that long run of close calls – no shame there, winning games by tight margins as you deal with a rash of injuries – the ‘Hoos have put together their best two complementary football games of the season in their past two.

The response from the voters: meh.

Collective shrug.

Whatevs.

Virginia was slotted at #16 in both of the polls, up a spot in each from last week.

The next rankings to wait for come on Tuesday night, with the rollout of the efforts of the SEC/Big Ten/Notre Dame Invitational Committee.

I would expect marginal positive movement for our Cavaliers in that one, too – maybe up a single spot, to #17.

The task ahead is still as clear as it’s been: win next week in Charlotte, and they’re in, as far as that College Football Playoff is concerned.

Quick hits

Three injuries of note from Saturday’s 27-7 win over Virginia Tech.

  • First, left tackle McKale Boley. Word on him, postgame, from head coach Tony Elliott, is that the X-rays were negative.
  • For wideout Cam Ross, who left after four offensive snaps, the issue is a hamstring. “He stayed dressed out. He said it’d be ready by next week. We’ll know more once we get through doctors check in the morning,” Elliott said.
  • I didn’t notice until a reader pointed out to me this morning that defensive back Ja’Son Prevard saw limited action last night. When I looked it up, I found that Prevard only logged nine snaps in the Tech game.

Leave Dianna Russini alone: Sportswriters, coaches, happen to like hot tubs

I’m totally on the side of Dianna Russini in this generated controversy over her being caught holding hands, hugging and lounging in a hot tub with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. Seriously, what sportswriter isn’t holding hands, hugging and lounging in hot tubs with coaches they cover? Just last week, for instance, Ryan Odom,...
