There is a risk of a tornado, hail, damaging wind gusts, heavy rain and thunderstorms throughout much of Virginia this afternoon. However, the Shenandoah Valley will likely be spared from the worst of the severe weather.
The weather system that brought “wicked thunderstorm winds” to southern Michigan and Indiana yesterday will descend on the Commonwealth today.
“Strong thunderstorms are likely to erupt this afternoon. While the entire state is fair game for severe weather, the highest likelihood is east of the Shenandoah Valley,” said Tom Kines, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather.
“The more sunshine there is prior to the storms, the more likely the storms will be severe,” he said. “The sunshine will warm the atmosphere which is an important ingredient for the storms to form.”
Any storm this afternoon may contain hail, damaging wind gusts, heavy rain and yes, even a tornado, Kines said.
The storms yesterday contained wind gusts of 75 to 100 miles per hour.
The front responsible for these storms will move off the coast tonight and tomorrow will be a cooler but sunny day.
More warmth will return Thursday and Friday with some humidity in the air on Thursday.
