The Waynesboro Police Department has charged three men involved in a motor vehicle theft/scrap metal fraud operation after a three month joint investigation with the Buckingham County Sheriff’s Office.

Jason Todd Cash, 39 years old of Buckingham County, and 24 year old William Curtis Hope and 45 year old Leo Thomas Herring, Jr., both of Schuyler all face numerous felony charges of stealing vehicles and selling them for scrap over several weeks last summer.

In late February of this year, an investigator with the Buckingham County Sheriff’s Office notified the police department about vehicles reported stolen in Buckingham County ending up in a Waynesboro recycle center.  The investigation determined nine vehicles belonging to the same Buckingham County victim were stolen in August and September and brought to Waynesboro where they were sold for scrap metal.  The vehicles, all ranging in age from 19 to 43 years old, were either towed to Waynesboro or driven by one of the three men.  The men received a total of $2,953.10 for the nine vehicles.

The felony charges are as follows:

Jason Todd Cash

  1. Obtain Money by False Pretenses – 4 counts
  2. Sale of Stolen Property – 4 counts

William Curtis Hope

  1. Obtain Money by False Pretenses – 2 counts
  2. Sale of Stolen Property – 2 counts

Leo Thomas Herring, Jr.

  1. Obtain Money by False Pretense – 1 count
  2. Sale of Stolen Property – 1 count

Hope and Cash were already incarcerated on other crimes at Middle River Regional Jail and Piedmont Regional Jail, respectively, when they were served with the new charges over the weekend.  Herring has yet to be arrested.
