The politics of FEMA: Trump approves emergency declaration for MAGA Kentucky

Donald Trump threatened to make California beg for FEMA help during last month’s wildfires. No such groveling is necessary with the flooding in the MAGA Ohio Valley.

“The Department of Homeland Security stands ready to take immediate action to offer resources and support,” DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement in a press release from FEMA touting Trump’s approval of an emergency declaration for Kentucky, which has been impacted by flooding from heavy snow followed up by heavy rains in the past week.

The release notes that FEMA, which Trump has also threatened to close down, “is closely coordinating with state and local officials to provide support as widespread flooding impacts portions of Kentucky, Virginia and West Virginia.”

Kentucky, of note, has a Democratic governor, Andy Beshear, who was a finalist in the Kamala Harris VP sweepstakes last summer.

West Virginia is as MAGA as MAGA gets. Virginia has a Republican governor, Glenn Youngkin, but that is by accident, and the state voted Democrat in each of the past three presidential cycles in which Trump was a candidate.

U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., wrote on social media on Monday that he is “heartbroken to see communities across Southwest Virginia once again struck by flooding,” and pledged to work with U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va., and Ninth District Republican Congressman Morgan Griffith “to make sure Southwest Virginians have what they need to build back stronger.”

Good luck with that.

Kentucky and West Virginia both voted Trump in 2024.

They’re first in line.

“Local emergency managers should swiftly notify people in the affected areas to take action to protect themselves and their belongings. DHS stands ready to help when a state needs, requests and declares an emergency. Follow us for updates and closely monitor messages from your state and local leaders,” Noem said.

Glenn Youngkin goes on Sean Hannity podcast to plead for job with Trump

Glenn Youngkin desperately wants a job in the Trump regime, for a reason that I can’t put my finger on: Youngkin has a net worth of $400 million, most of that his equity in the ghastly private-equity firm he led before he ran for governor in 2021.
