The City of Staunton  is preparing for a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain on Sunday. Public Works employees have started pre-treating the roads with a brine solution in advance of the inclement weather.

They are also preparing equipment to spread salt and remove snow throughout a snow and ice event predicted for Sunday night into Monday.

The city reports it has 26 trucks ready to be deployed to assist with snow removal operations.

In addition to the Public Works department, the city Parks and Recreation staff is pre-treating sidewalks and parking lots ahead of the storm. Parks & Rec staff will also be on standby for snow removal once the weather begins.

As a reminder, the city code requires that residents and business owners remove snow, sleet or ice from walkways in front of their property promptly. Do not shovel snow from the sidewalk or driveway into the street. Businesses are reminded not to move snow from their parking lots onto the sidewalk.

Decisions regarding potential changes to trash collection and recycling center hours on Monday, Jan. 6, will be made over the weekend.

The Staunton Public Library, along with other city facilities, will monitor conditions and announce any schedule changes closer to the storm

Though there will be no parking restrictions in effect, drivers are encouraged to avoid on-street parking where possible to help crews clear snow more effectively. Free parking will be available in the New Street and Johnson Street parking garages starting at 5:30 p.m. today until the storm ends and snow removal is completed in the Downtown Central Business District.
