Staunton residents who want to dispose of large, bulky items during the city’s fall heavy trash collection must have those items placed curbside no later than 7 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 8.

Crews will collect items over a two-week period, with all pickups completed by Friday, Sept. 19. There will not be a separate bulky brush collection period.

For more information, visit www.staunton.va.us/heavytrash or call Public Works at 540.332.3892.

Notes

Twice yearly heavy trash pickup: As part of Staunton’s trash modernization initiative, heavy trash pickup is being offered twice each year. This September marks the city’s first fall collection event.

Who can participate: This service is available to residential trash customers only. Apartment and condominium residents should check with their property managers regarding disposal procedures.

You get one shot at it: Once collection crews have passed through a neighborhood, they will not return. Items placed at the curb after 7 a.m. on Sept. 8 may not be picked up.

What you can put out: Use this opportunity to dispose of large appliances, furniture, mattresses, and other household items that don’t fit in regular trash containers.

What you can’t put out: The following items

  • Hazardous waste (pesticides, oil-based paint, chemicals)
  • Car batteries
  • Electronics
  • Stumps, rocks, and concrete
  • Old vehicles and building materials
  • Tires

Hazardous waste can be safely disposed of during the Staunton, Augusta, Waynesboro Household Hazardous Waste Day on Saturday, Sept. 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon at the Waynesboro Facilities Shop (900 Essex Ave.).

More details on the hazardous waster thing can be found at: www.acsawater.com/disposalguide.
