Rock vs. Triple H at WrestleMania: Is it 2000 or something?

wweSpoiler alert: Rock and Triple H are going to have a discussion backstage at WWE Smackdown Friday night about a match at WrestleMania 31.

Seriously. Rock vs. Triple H.

We all know that WWE doesn’t tease matches at WrestleMania without a plan in place to actually bring the matches it teases off. Which means: Rock vs. Triple H at WM31.

Really?

It’s not nearly as far-fetched as you might think at first glance, mainly because the main event that WWE creative had been working toward since the spring is blowing up in the McMahon-Helmsleys faces.

Roman Reigns went under the knife last month for emergency hernia surgery, putting his expected main-event match against WWE champ Brock Lesnar in serious jeopardy. Then it was revealed that Lesnar is not expected to defend his title again until the Royal Rumble, yes, in January, three months from now.

Yikes, indeed. Who will get the buildup on the other side of the main event is anybody’s guess at this point. Maybe it’s Reigns, if he recovers from the surgery better than expected. Doubtful that it’s Daniel Bryan, who won the WWE title in the main event at WrestleMania 30 before suffering a neck injury that has kept him on the shelf since the spring.

At this stage, creative may have to write in John Cena or Bray Wyatt, who reportedly is set to turn face to boost that side of the ledger on a depleted WWE talent roster.

Which brings us back to Rock-Triple H. Absent any current stars worth watching, Rock-H is sort of comfort food on a cold, rainy day. We’ve had it before, it was good, at the end, we were satisfied, so why not have it again?

And if Reigns returns in time to be a part of a main-event buildup, then you get two main events at ‘Mania. And if Bryan is healthy, even better. And then maybe WWE convinces CM Punk to return for a limited schedule along the lines of what Lesnar works. Then the show gets interesting.

But at least you have Rock-Triple H. Old reliable. Big stars, great mic work, unbelievable buildup, decent workrate, you won’t be overwhelmed, but you won’t be disappointed.

WWE could do worse, and they often do.
