The Annual Praise House Service, sponsored by the Mary Baldwin University African-American Religion Class, in coordination with Allen Chapel and Christ Our Redeemer A.M.E churches, will be held 11 a.m. Sunday at Allen Chapel A.M.E Church.
The service is a reenactment of what a slave service or plantation house service would be like. Held each year, the service includes historical music, dance and dramatic arts through testimonies and the immense importance of storytelling.
Students from the African-American Religion class at MBU plan the event.
“The service uses the talents of students from start to finish,” said Megan Edwards, president of the Student Government Association and MBU senior. “It’s planned, organized, and run by the students. They pick the songs and perform during the service. It’s historically accurate, and based on the teachings and readings of the class.”
The service will feature guest speaker, Presiding Elder Chester W. Morris, along with MBU’s Anointed Voices of Praise and Greater Things Dance Ministry.
The office for Inclusive Excellence invites members from the community to experience worship as it was on a slave plantation. Time period clothing is encouraged.
Allen Chapel is located at 936 Sudbury St. in Staunton.
