Rockbridge County: Group needs help placing five cats from animal hoarding case

Dogs Deserve Better Blue Ridge is seeking homes for more cats from a property in Rockbridge County that is the site of one of the more aggressive animal hoarding cases we’ve seen in these parts in a while.

Sixty-four cats have been removed from the property, and Dogs Deserve Better Blue Ridge is among the six local animal rescue groups that have been working with Rockbridge County Animal Control to rehome the felines.

“Thanks to several wonderful rescue partners, we’ve been able to transfer many of those cats into other organizations. Unfortunately, we’ve reached the point where those resources have run out,” DDBBB said in an email plea to its supporters that went out on Thursday.

Stevie Nicks

Stevie Nicks, who is “very pregnant.”

“She has allowed us to pet her, but has not been the biggest fan of being picked up. The clinic environment is very overwhelming to her.

“She cannot have her kittens at the veterinary clinic. She needs an experienced foster home as soon as possible where she can safely give birth and care for her babies.”

Abba

Abba, an orange female, who is “incredibly shut down.”

“She’s allowed me to pet her, including on her face and body, and has even allowed being picked up, but she’s so overwhelmed by boarding that we haven’t been able to see her true personality.

“She has a lot of potential and deserves the chance at a normal home.”

Eleanor

Eleanor, a calico, who is “understandably frightened, but has also allowed us to pet her.”

“She cowers in her kennel when you reach for her, but does not hiss or try to scratch when you touch her.

“Like Abba, she has a lot of potential to be a family pet if given the time to decompress and build trust.”

Disco

Disco, a black tortie, who is “the most fearful of the group.”

“Unfortunately, she got loose at the vet clinic and had a terrifying experience being wrangled back into her crate.

“She hasn’t been comfortable with handling yet, and honestly, we can’t blame her after everything she’s been through. She will likely need someone who is experienced with managing cats.”

Joni

Joni, who is a “bit on the spicier side.”

“She has a foster until Aug. 20, when she will need new placement.

“Hopefully, the time in her foster home will give us an idea on if she can adjust to home life but she will need a new foster after the 20th to give us time to come up with a plan for her.”
