The track of Tropical Storm Debby has moved farther west than previously predicted which means the Shenandoah Valley will see more rain than expected.

Waynesboro and much of the Shenandoah Valley will see four to eight inches of rain, according to Thomas Kines, a senior meteorologist with AccuWeather. Rain is expected to begin Wednesday night and continue through Saturday.

“Obviously, the rain is welcome, but it might be too much of a good thing,” Kines said. “Rainfall of four inches or more over a one- to two-day period can certainly cause flooding of some streams and creeks and poor drainage areas.”

There is also the risk of tornados over the eastern half of the state Thursday into Friday, especially over southeast Virginia and northeast North Carolina which would include Virginia Beach and the Outer Banks, Kines said.
