Gov.-elect Terry McAuliffe announced on Friday his selection of Admiral John C. Harvey Jr. as Secretary of Veterans Affairs & Homeland Security. The announcement was made at the Military Officers Association of America in Alexandria.
“I am so pleased today to announce that Admiral John Harvey Jr. who will bring his unmatched leadership skills, his knowledge of both veterans affairs and emergency preparedness and enormous experience managing large enterprises with multiple missions to my administration as my nominee for Secretary of Veterans Affairs and Homeland Security,” said Governor-elect McAuliffe. “Admiral Harvey will be a voice for Virginia veterans to help ensure that VA claims are being fulfilled on time, that veterans who return from battle have the training and resources that they need, and that every military family can live, work and thrive in every corner of this Commonwealth.”
Admiral John Harvey served in the United States Navy for 39 years, rising through the ranks to become the Commander of the U.S. Forces Fleet in Norfolk, Virginia. Admiral Harvey was commissioned from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1973 and immediately commenced training in the Navy’s Nuclear Propulsion program. Throughout his career, he served three tours at the Bureau of Naval Personnel in a variety of billets including surface nuclear officer detailer, CGN/CVN placement officer, surface nuclear program manager in N13, legislative adviser to chief of naval personnel (CNP), executive assistant to CNP and as director, Total Force Programming and Manpower Management Division (OPNAV N12). He has also served as the senior military assistant to the under secretary of defense (Policy), and on the Navy staff as deputy for Warfare Integration (OPNAV N7F). Most recently, he served as the 54th chief of naval personnel/OPNAV N1 and as the director, Navy staff (OPNAV).
“Protecting this nation and those who serve it has been my life’s work and I am deeply honored to bring the skills, experience, and perspective I’ve developed during my career in the Navy to the task of serving Virginia’s veterans and their families,” said Admiral Harvey. “I am also eager to devote my expertise in preparedness issues to ensuring that this Commonwealth is ready to respond to any and all risks to the security of our communities and our citizens.”
