A former employee at the Augusta County-based Mathers Construction has been arrested for allegedly stealing approximately $26,800 from the company.
Crystal Gale Murphy, 45, of Waynesboro, was arrested on Aug. 14 on one count of felony embezzlement.
According to the Augusta County Sheriff’s Office, the investigation was initiated in early June after the business notified the ACSO of the theft.
The offense date on the felony charge is listed as May 17, 2024.
Murphy’s next court appearance is scheduled for Oct. 14 at 1:30 p.m. in Augusta County General District Court.
The ACSO confirmed this morning Murphy is not in Middle River Regional Jail. Online court records show she was released on summons. The court confirmed this afternoon she was released on a $2500 unsecured personal recognizance bond.
Murphy is no longer employed with Mathers Construction. Murphy’s LinkedIn profile shows she began work as an office professional at Mathers in December 2022. Prior to that, Murphy worked at DSW Designer Shoe Warehouse and Ross Stores Inc.
If convicted of felony embezzlement, the punishment can include a prison sentence of up to 20 years, a maximum fine of $2,500 and restitution to the victim.
The online court system also shows Murphy is being represented by Waynesboro attorney Jessica Sherman-Stoltz with Sherman-Stoltz Law Group.
Sherman-Stoltz is most known for her involvement with Nexus; her firm had an agreement with Nexus for one year at $2.08 million to handle civil and criminal immigration cases on a pro-bono basis for its clients, according to court records.
Her firm hired staff for the expansion, however, the funds from Nexus dried up as Nexus became embroiled in legal battles in Augusta County and throughout the U.S.
The law group was eventually awarded a $1.1 million judgement against Nexus and its owners, Mike Donovan and Richard Moore.
