A Nelson County establishment has the distinct honor of receiving the top prize in a competition of wines produced in Virginia.
Valley Road Vineyards in Afton was selected for the 2026 Virginia Governor’s Cup for its 2023 Cabernet Franc Reserve grown at Grayson Vineyard in Monticello.
For the sixth year, Virginia cider was judged in its own category, with the highest-scoring cider awarded to Blue Bee Cider for its 2024 Hewe’s Crab.
The annual gala and competition were held at Richmond’s Main Street Station last week.
The competition received a record of more than 670 entries with 224 gold medals awarded to 113 wineries and cideries located across Virginia.
A panel of judges evaluated entries based on appearance, aroma, flavor, commercial suitability and overall quality. To be eligible, the entries were required to have been produced with 100 percent Virginia-grown fruit.
“Tonight reflects the dedication, innovation and agricultural strength that continues to elevate Virginia as one of our nation’s premier wine regions,” said Gov. Abigail Spanberger.
