A VDOT contractor has begun work on an $18.3 million project to widen Route 11 from two lanes to create a four-lane divided highway in Rockingham County south of the Harrisonburg city limits.
Per a release from VDOT, the project extends from just south of the Route 704 (Oakwood Drive) intersection to just north of Heritage Drive.
The initial focus of the construction project will be at the intersection of South Valley Pike and Oakwood Drive, where Route 11 is already four lanes.
During this phase, motorists should expect single lane closures on northbound and southbound Route 11 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday as crews complete temporary widening on the shoulders.
The second phase of the project will begin later this year, and involves the widening of Route 11 where it is currently just one lane northbound and southbound. During construction, a single lane will remain open in each direction on Route 11, which will be widened on its western side utilizing as much of the existing roadway as possible. The center turn lane will serve as the southbound travel lane during construction.
Six-foot paved shoulders will be included in the widening to accommodate bicycles along the corridor. The median will vary in width. Narrow median areas will have a raised median including curbs. Wide median areas will be graded with a ditch.
Additional improvements will include two new right turn lanes and traffic-signal upgrades at the Route 11 intersections with Route 704 (Oakwood Drive and Cecil Wampler Road).
One right turn lane will serve motorists going from eastbound Oakwood Drive to southbound Route 11. The other will be constructed on northbound Route 11 to eastbound Cecil Wampler Road.
The addition of these new turn lanes will decrease traffic delays at both intersections.
Completion is scheduled for August 2028.
