Part of Main Street (Route 340) in downtown Waynesboro will close Wednesday for a bridge replacement. Main Street will be closed between McElroy Street and East Avenue during replacement of the bridge over the South River. Final completion of this project is scheduled for December 2017, but Main Street and the new bridge are expected to open to traffic in June 2017. All work is weather permitting.
Throughout the construction project, motorists will continue to have access to all businesses near the work zone. Through traffic will detour onto Broad Street (Route 250), which runs parallel to Main Street one block to the north.
This project also includes the relocation of McElroy Street, which runs through the center of Constitution Park between Main Street and Short Street. The new road will be built 200 feet further west, reclaiming green space within the park. Throughout the construction project, drivers can access portions of Constitution Park from Short Street. The municipal parking lot along Arch Avenue will remain open.
The new South River bridge and its approaches will have two 12-foot travel lanes and 6-foot bicycle lanes. Sidewalks will be built on both sides of the roadway to improve pedestrian access. The Virginia Department of Transportation worked with the city of Waynesboro on architectural and lighting features that would complement the adjacent park and the city’s downtown.
The Commonwealth Transportation Board in January 2016 awarded a $7 million construction to Fairfield-Echols LLC of Fishersville. Further details about the project are available here.
