During the Arts of Lexington Block Party on Friday, visitors, shoppers, and random pedestrians will notice a lot more color on Washington Street on the block between Main Street and Jefferson Street.
A phenomenon known as Yarn Bombing, common in larger urban areas, has come to our historic downtown. Yarn bombing is a type of graffiti or street art that employs colorful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn rather than more traditional methods of urban graffiti and is harmless because it is easily removed.
Poles will be wrapped in knitted and crocheted sweaters, banners with messages of peace, love and harmony will hang from fences and some of the stores will have decorative yarn creations related to their businesses. There is even a bicycle completely encased in yarn!
While these projects usually appear mysteriously, the Wednesday Night Knitting Society, or “WiNKS” for short, in conjunction with The Stitchin’ Post, where many of their members gather, have proudly claimed responsibility.
“What you see on the street is the result of crafters from elementary school age all the way to retirement. That tells me that fiber arts are alive and well in Rockbridge County!” says Erin Hutchinson, owner of The Stitchin’ Post on Main Street.
