Late surge lifts #1 Miami past #22 UVA, 9-2

Top-ranked Miami broke a scoreless deadlock with three sixth-inning runs en route to a 9-2 win over the UVA baseball team Saturday night at Alex Rodriguez Park in Coral Gables, Fla. Virginia (25-17, 10-10 ACC) was limited to five hits as Miami (30-7, 14-4) evened the series at a game apiece.

Virginia starter Adam Haseley (So., Windermere, Fla.) worked seven innings, allowing four runs (one earned), five hits and two walks while striking out three. He took the loss and dropped to 6-2 on the year.

Miami starter Michael Mediavilla (7-1) worked six innings before leaving after a seventh-inning walk with shoulder tightness. He earned the win after allowing a hit and five walks while striking out four.

The pitchers dueled through five innings as the teams combined for just three hits. Miami broke the stalemate in the sixth inning with three runs. With one out, Carl Chester bunted his way on base, as first baseman Pavin Smith (So., Jupiter, Fla.) was charged with an error after the ball came dislodged on his diving tag attempt. Christopher Barr doubled to right, and Zack Collins was intentionally walked to load the bases before Brandon Lopez singled in a run. A Johnny Ruiz sac fly made it 2-0 and UVA committed an error after having Lopez caught in a rundown between first and second on a potential pickoff, allowing Collins to score.

The Hurricanes pushed their lead to 4-0 in the seventh on a solo homer by Edgar Michelangeli. Miami broke the game wide open with five runs in the eighth inning off David Rosenberger (Sr., Bethlehem, Pa.), including back-to-back homers from Jason Heyward and Willie Abreu.

UVA broke up the shutout with two outs in the ninth inning on RBI singles from Andy Weber (Fr., Aurora, Ohio) and Justin Novak (So., Tokyo, Japan).
