AJ Colarusso held Virginia to four hits in six innings of work, keying Boston College to a 5-3 series-opening win on Friday in Beantown.

Colarusso (2-1, 3.37 ERA) struck out six and walked three, and allowed an unearned run.

Boston College (19-8, 7-3 ACC) came into the day ranked 31st in RPI, so, this isn’t what you’d think, in terms of the brand name.

BC already has ACC series wins this season over Miami (20-6, 3-4 ACC) and Cal (13-11, 0-6 ACC).

Kyle Johnson (0-1, 6.00 ERA) took the loss for Virginia (21-6, 6-4 ACC). Johnson, working his way back into pitching shape after an offseason injury set him back, went two innings, giving up two runs on three hits.

Henry Zatkowski worked the final six innings, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out three and walking one.

Game 2 in the series is scheduled for a 2 p.m. first pitch on Saturday.

Pitching probables:

  • Virginia: LHP Max Stammel(2-1, 4.97 ERA, 25.1 IP, 12 BB, 22 SO)
  • Boston College: LHP Tyler Mudd (1-2, 4.88 ERA, 24.0 IP, 7 BB, 15 SO)
