Interstate 64 lane, off-ramp closures in Augusta County Nov. 3-6

Chris Graham

600px-I-64Overnight lane and off-ramp closures are scheduled for next week at the Interstate 64 interchange at exit 91 (Route 285/Fishersville) in Augusta County. These closures are for milling and paving of the westbound off-ramp. All work is weather permitting.

I-64 eastbound and westbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures between mile markers 90 and 92 on Tuesday, November 3, through Thursday, November 5, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning. Work is scheduled to be complete by 7 a.m. on Friday, November 6.

In addition, the I-64 westbound off-ramp to Route 285 (Tinkling Spring Road) will be closed Tuesday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. the following morning. Drivers can access Route 285 by continuing west to I-81 northbound, taking exit 222 and following Route 250 (Jefferson Highway) east back to Route 285.

These lane and ramp closures are part of the reconstruction of exit 91 at Route 285 near Fishersville. When contractors finish the project, the road will have four lanes between Route 636/640 and Route 935. A new bridge over I-64 will accommodate the additional through lanes and dual left-turn lanes at both on-ramps. Additional turn lanes at the Route 636/640 intersection will handle traffic from the nearby hospital complex. Route 285 will have a shared-use path for pedestrians and bicyclists.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded Shirley Contracting of Lorton, Va., a $21 million design-build contract in September 2012. The company is performing the work in three phases, starting with construction of the new bridge over I-64 and widening the roadway to the west side of Route 285.
