Inside the Numbers: #6 UVA basketball rolls in Charleston Classic

uva basketball practiceNice win Long Beach State, 87-52 victim of #6 UVA on Friday night in the Charleston Classic, was 3-0 coming in, with wins over BYU (ranked 59th by KenPom.com) and Seton Hall (91st in KenPom.com).

Which is to say, the 49ers aren’t slouches. Virginia just made them look that way.

The Pack-Line held the Beach to 31.3 percent shooting for the game, a night after shooting 55.6 percent in the 80-77 win over Seton Hall.

Two long, big runs provided the separation – a 19-2 run over a nearly 10-minute stretch of the first half, and a 17-1 run over a nearly five-minute stretch of the second half.

For the game, the Niners scored .85 points per possession.

Virginia scored 1.43 points per possession and shot 55.7 percent from the field on the night.

Efficiency KenPom.com rates Virginia’s D third in the country through four games, allowing 0.91 points per possession.

The UVA offense is ranked ninth, scoring 1.13 points per possession.

Shayok shines Marial Shayok was moved into the starting lineup Thursday night, and Friday night he looked like he wants to put a stranglehold on the spot.

In 28 minutes, the sophomore had a game-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting with a team-high five assists.

Aggressive LP Before the season, coach Tony Bennett talked about how he has been pushing London Perrantes to be more aggressive on offense.

Perrantes showed why Friday night, scoring 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor and 3-of-6 shooting from three-point range in 25 minutes.

Tobey benched Mike Tobey began the second half on the bench in favor of redshirt freshman Jack Salt. Bennett seemed to be trying to send a message to Tobey, a talented senior who has yet to show the kind of aggression that would elevate his game.

Tobey logged just five minutes in the second half and nine minutes for the game, scoring seven points and pulling down two rebounds.

Salt had six points on 3-of-3 shooting and one rebound in 13 minutes off the bench.

Freshman Jarred Reuter got 11 minutes of playing time off the bench, and scored two points and snared a team-high six rebounds.

Stat sheet stuffer Isaiah Wilkins got 17 minutes off the bench, scoring two points, dishing out three assists, pulling down three rebounds and blocking three shots.

He’s on fire Devon Hall had an NBA Jam second half. In 12 minutes off the bench, the redshirt sophomore had 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting from three.

He also had another three taken off the board because Salt was called for a three-second violation.

Fouls Rules on hand-checking are being more rigidly enforced, as we all know from the foul-fest that took the place of the game at George Washington Monday night.

It’s a small sample size, but through four games this season, the Cavs are averaging 15.3 fouls per game. In 2014-2015, Virginia was called for 14.2 fouls per game.

Not a big difference.
