The ACC, today, announced its Football Players of the Week for Week 1; somehow, nobody from Virginia Tech, after the Hokies’ season-opening 73-3 win over VMI.
Obviously, a factor of the starters not being able to run up stats because the game was a blowout.
Honorees were selected by a vote of a select media panel.

ACC Football Player of the Week: Week 1
QB: Mason Heintschel, Pitt
- Completed 31-of-41 passes (75.6 percent) for 453 yards, seven TDs and no interceptions in Pitt’s 59-14 victory over Miami (Ohio).
Tailback: Nate Sheppard, Duke
- Rushed for 227 yards, the fifth-best single-game rushing performance in program history, to help lead Duke to a 17-3 win over Tulane.
Wideout: Malachi Toney, Miami
- Turned in a record-setting performance in Miami’s 45-6 win at Stanford, hauling in 12 passes for a program-record 234 receiving yards and three TDs.
O line: PJ Williams, SMU
- The ACC notes didn’t give any good reason for his selection. I looked up his Week 1 on Pro Football Focus, and he wasn’t even the highest-graded O lineman on the SMU squad in the team’s 27-24 win at Florida State on Monday night.
D line: Bryce Lewis, Duke
- Recorded a career-high six tackles, three tackles-for-loss and two sacks.
Linebacker: Vincent Firenze, Wake Forest
- Recorded six solo tackles, shared the team lead with nine total tackles, had a tackle-for-loss and a forced fumble in Wake’s 38-16 win over Akron on Thursday night.
Defensive back: Jimmy Wyrick, SMU
- Recorded one sack, one tackle-for-loss, one pass breakup and eight tackles.
Special teams: Rahkeem Smith, Georgia Tech
- Returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown in the season-opening 14-13 loss to Colorado on Thursday.
Rookie of the Week: Shavane Anderson Jr., RB, Syracuse
- Rushed for 102 yards and three touchdowns in his collegiate debut for the Orange, in a 66-3 win over New Hampshire.
