Howell congratulates Virginia’s national award-winning Medicaid Fraud Control Unit

bill howellVirginia House of Delegates Speaker William J. Howell (R-Stafford) on Tuesday congratulated Virginia’s national award-winning Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. The MFCU was recently honored with the Taxpayers Against Fraud Education Fund’s “Honest Abe” award, Attorney General Mark Herring announced Tuesday.

“I congratulate the Attorney General’s office and the hardworking employees of Virginia’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit for being honored for their relentless efforts to combat Medicaid fraud and protect Virginia taxpayers. These dedicated public servants work tirelessly to root out fraud and abuse in a rapidly growing Medicaid system. Taxpayers across the Commonwealth are grateful for the MFCU’s hard work in recovering $61 million this year and $1.8 billion since 1982.

“Undoubtedly, however, the MFCU’s work only captures a fraction of the overall fraud, abuse and inefficiencies in the Medicaid system. Medicaid is a massive program that consumes over 20 percent of Virginia’s general fund spending. It is growing at an average rate of eight percent per year and consumes over 30 percent of all new general fund revenues. As the existing program continues to grow, so too will fraud and our need to vigilantly combat it.

“This is just one of the many reasons why Virginia should not expand Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Instead, we must continue efforts to reform the existing program in order to save taxpayers money and strengthen the safety net for our most vulnerable citizens.”

Leave Dianna Russini alone: Sportswriters, coaches, happen to like hot tubs

I’m totally on the side of Dianna Russini in this generated controversy over her being caught holding hands, hugging and lounging in a hot tub with New England Patriots coach Mike Vrabel. Seriously, what sportswriter isn’t holding hands, hugging and lounging in hot tubs with coaches they cover? Just last week, for instance, Ryan Odom,...
