Herring statement on new Commission on Integrity and Public Confidence in State Government

mark herringAttorney General Mark Herring issued the following statement regarding Governor McAuliffe’s creation of the Governor’s Commission on Integrity and Public Confidence in State Government:

“Virginians deserve to know that their elected officials are working in the best interest of the people, not themselves, and not special interests. This commission’s charge gets to the heart of the issue, which is restoring Virginians’ trust and confidence in their government after a dark period. That trust lies at the intersection of strong ethics laws, campaign finance rules, and redistricting reform, so I’m pleased to see this group intends to address these issues and more. This impressive group has strong, bipartisan credentials, and since their report will be ready in time for the legislative session, I hope their recommendations are given the attention and consideration they warrant.

“Governor McAuliffe has long been an advocate for the kind of reforms we need and he has already taken proactive steps to ensure integrity in government. By creating this task force and giving it a set of specific, defined issues to explore, he has taken yet another important and needed step forward.”
